We camped right by the Mara River in the Maasai Mara, and got front-row seats to the dramatic wildebeest crossing. I still can't get over the tension as the wildebeest made their move and crocodiles lurked in the waters. It's considered the ‘Cradle of Mankind,’ and seeing the place where some of the earliest human fossils were discovered was humbling. The small museum was informative, and the surrounding landscape, with its layers of earth exposed by erosion, is a geologist’s dream.
One of my favorite moments during our safari in the Serengeti was seeing lions sunbathing on the kopjes—those iconic rock formations scattered across the plains. Our guide from Unscripted Safaris knew exactly where to find them. We spent nearly an hour watching a lion pride lounging on the rocks and occasionally getting up to stretch or scout for prey. Drifting over the Maasai Mara at sunrise in a hot air balloon was the absolute highlight of our safari with Unscripted. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy felt like a private piece of heaven. The landscapes were pristine, and it was much quieter than other parks, so we often felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Unscripted Safaris set us up with an amazing guide who had a deep passion for the region's wildlife, especially the endangered Grevy’s zebra and black rhinos that Lewa is famous for. We stayed at a beautiful lodge overlooking the plains and even saw wildlife right from our deck!
Amboseli is every elephant lover’s dream, and Unscripted Safaris knew exactly how to get us those up-close, magical moments. We saw massive herds of elephants, some with adorable calves, all against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. The contrast between the dry, dusty plains and the greenery around the swamps where elephants gather was striking. The park’s unique wetlands attracted a wide variety of birds too, so there was never a dull moment.
Unscripted Safaris took us on an adrenaline-pumping adventure at Hell’s Gate National Park. It’s one of the few parks in Kenya where you can actually cycle and walk amongst wildlife! We biked through the stunning gorges and past towering cliffs, seeing zebras and warthogs along the way. Hell’s Gate is also the inspiration behind Disney’s The Lion King, and you can absolutely see why—the rock formations are otherworldly. A perfect blend of adventure and nature!
Samburu National Reserve was a standout on our safari. It’s located in Kenya’s northern region and offers a very different wildlife experience from the southern parks. Thanks to Unscripted Safaris, we got to see the 'Samburu Special Five,' which includes the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, and Beisa oryx—all species you won’t easily find elsewhere. The landscape of rugged hills, acacia trees, and the life-giving Ewaso Ng’iro River was absolutely beautiful.
Lake Naivasha was a peaceful stop on our Unscripted Safaris tour, and a real highlight for me as an avid birder. We took a boat ride on the lake and were amazed by the sheer number of birds—herons, kingfishers, and of course, African fish eagles that swooped down to catch fish right in front of us. The lake’s calm waters, with Mount Longonot in the distance, created the perfect backdrop for photography. We even saw hippos lounging in the water during the ride.

The Aberdare National Park was a completely different experience from the open savannahs of other Kenyan parks. Unscripted Safaris took us through the misty, dense forest, where we spotted some of Kenya’s more elusive wildlife like the bongo antelope and Colobus monkeys. The park’s waterfalls were breathtaking, especially the Karuru Falls, which drop nearly 300 meters. We stayed at The Ark, a lodge designed for wildlife viewing at a watering hole, and it was magical to see animals like elephants and buffalo gathering at night.
